The World Health Organization (WHO) is currently working on the development of the eleventh revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11). Chapter 7 of the draft ICD-11, covering mental and behavioural disorders, includes a new grouping – “disorders due to substance use and addictive behaviours”. This grouping indicates the conceptual integration of substance use disorders with “behavioural addictions”, represented in the draft ICD-11 by “gambling disorder” and “gaming disorder” with “predominantly on-line” and “predominantly off-line” subtypes. The proposal for the draft ICD-11 is based not only on the currently available evidence regarding neurobiology and clinical features of these conditions, but also on similarities in policy and program responses. The session will address the rationale for the proposed changes in ICD-11 with regard to “behavioural addictions”, and existing controversies and challenges in this area.
