Objective: To determine the changing of the prevalence of the two main alcohol consumption patterns in college students.
Methods: A cohort study was carried out from October 2005 to March 2015 among college students from Universidade de Santiago de Compostela (n=1382). Subjects were evaluated in 5 occasions: at 18 and 20 years in the classroom, and at 22, 24 and 27 by phone. Alcohol consumption was measured with the AUDIT questionnaire, defining: 1) Risky consumption (RC), dichotomizing AUDIT score and 2) Binge drinking (BD), dichotomizing the third question of the AUDIT. Analyses were performed separately for men and women.
Results: Participation was 99% at baseline and 64%, 44%, 24% and 29% at 2, 4, 6, and 9 at years of follow-up respectively. For men the RC prevalences were 58.0%, 62.6%, 55.4%, 22.2% and 31.1%; while BD prevalences were 35.6%, 38.8%, 43.2%, 17.3% and 20.0% at baseline and at 2, 4, 6 and 9 at years of follow-up respectively. In women, the RC prevalences were 51.5%, 52.2%, 43.2%, 12.0% and 20.9%; while BD´s were 17.9%, 16.7%, 15.6%, 4.1% and 4.9% at baseline and at 2, 4, 6 and at 9-year of follow-up respectively.
Conclusion: At both patterns men have higher prevalences of alcohol consumption. But while in the RC confidence intervals overlap and the trend is similar, with the maximum consumption at 20 years old for both genders, BD’s evolution differs. Women seem to have reached their peak of consumption at 18 and men reached it at the age of 22. When planning interventions to reduce these consumption patterns it must be taking into account that a large proportion of the students practiced before college, others start during college and a significant proportion continue practicing them after ending their university studies
